Art explosion entry, week 56. Unconventional nude.
When I read unconventional nude I automatically thought of Egon Schiele.
His work was confronting and controversial.
They were definitely provocative and sexual, but it is the tortured contorted discomfort, particularly with respect to his self portraiture, that appeal to me.
The rawness and physically postured discomfort of these works intrigue me most.
Unlike images of divine painterly quality, the sensual emotive disposition of these works have a power, due to the disquiet they generate in the viewer.
You can feel his personal physical discomfort.
That is the unconventional aspect I aspired for in my drawing.
Starting with an unconventional "canvas" in the way of a large piece of cardboard from a packing box, from my recent move.
I wanted to express a degree of torment.
The battle to live daily, at odds within your own physical form.
To literally need to hold yourself together physically and constantly posture and reposition.
A simple graphite on paper.
Then worked it up a little.
Maintaining a raw quality.
This is an example of the Egon Schiele works I had in mind.
