this is art!

Hey there!

Last week, my flatmate approached me and asked if I would be interested in hosting a workshop on building an art installation. I have done a few projects like this, the biggest one was a stage installation for the German Fuchsbau Festival, earlier this year. I love the process of bringing creative people together, creating a vision and then finding a technical solution on how to make it happen.

Earlier this month I met a French architect who is currently living in Kathmandu and we instantly connected. When I told him about the workshop, he immediately wanted to join and help. This weekend, we sat together for a coffee, brainstorming about possible installations.

We came up with bamboo as the main material, since it is a cheap, sustainable, aesthetically pleasing and really flexible material. The installation should create a space where a DJ could play a set, on one of our upcoming events. I worked on a few things with bamboo, last year I build my own bicycle frame out of bamboo, which was a awesome project and a lot of fun.

So, this is what the place which we are planning the installation for, looks like:

After a few coffee we decided that it should be a geometrical structure, which frames the artist and at the same time serves as a sunshade.

This is what the first draft looked like:

After measuring the place, we came up with a more technical drawing:

It culminated in a 3D model, created with Rhino:

We were quite happy with the progress the two of us made on this day and the final structure will be very similar to this draft. We are planning to build it in a way, so you can attach a hammock to it, how awesome is that :)

The workshop will be help on the 25th + 26th of November and we invited young Nepali people to join us and build with us. A lot of young people here are not used to using simple tools such as a drill or a electric saw. We hope to inspire the youth to start their own projects and show them how to realise your vision.

The whole workshop and the final result will be documented and published on Steemit.

After a lot of computer work, I am really excited to use my hands again.

Hear you soon, much love,
