Body Horror Illustrated
Receive a cordial greeting, dear reader, I hope you are very well. I invite you to accompany me on this occasion with a new content!
I will begin by saying that I spent several days researching for this content that some time ago caused me immense curiosity and gave me a lot of freedom to make the illustrations that I show you today through this platform.
One of the things I like best about art dear friends is the infinite ability to create new images, concepts and emotions through a single stroke, brushstroke, among others. In the world of terror is not different, there is no limit, the limit is given by the ability you have to imagine and go beyond what has already been created. When we talk about terror it is very normal to imagine a huge monster, an evil spirit or a serial killer, but ... for now we are going to stay with the monster, the monsters of the movies are usually deformed and horrifying beings whose appearance makes the simple fact of looking at them with fear or even a lot of disgust. Visual art has always considered a delight ... but ... what happens when art is no longer considered something beautiful?
A few days ago I began to think about the amount of film and TV genres that exist, I have always been a person who enjoys horror, is one of my favorite genres, then, I remembered some movies and series where they use the corporal deformation of some characters to generate visual impact on the viewer and is a really incredible resource using in the artistic world.
To make this post I elaborated several illustrations inspired by the theme that I am going to deal with you today, a very curious topic that gave me freedom to make beings of different shapes, sizes and colors, the illustration that this publication heads was made inspiring me in monsters of the video game franchise "Silent Hill" where it is very common to observe a fairly large variety of deformed characters that frighten a lot and is normal, since, often these characters represent fears of some person.
On this occasion we will talk about ...:
Without a doubt the bodyhorror has marked a trend in the horror of the last decades, appearing not only in the world of cinema, now you can find material that uses the resource of the deformation of bodies in cartoons, Japanese sleeves like Uzumaki or even more sick as the material created by the cartoonist Uziga Waita, this resource, often tests the resistance of the viewer in relation to the visual impact that can have a material whether audiovisual, caricaturized or comic.
Then knowing the above, we can say that the body horror has been something revolutionary over time, this artistic style, because yes, it is an artistic style, gives the creator full freedom to deform a character as much as he wishes without disturbing , because the objective of tendency is to make the viewer feel uncomfortable, although nowadays it can vary since many have used the corporal deformation as something to make the character more beautiful, more slender, more idealized, but in this article we will focus more on terror that can cause, that is, the roots of Body Horror.
To understand better what it is about I will leave this brief description here:
Basically, the body horror refers to everything related to transformations, mutations, mutilations, torture and even the destruction of the human body. That is, there are no limits, so it is possible to see any type of alteration.
And how not to speak of the origin of this genre?, The term was coined in 1986 by the academic magazine Screen as a way to classify it in the category of science fiction but also to conjugate terror. In fact, this type of productions began to be known in the late 70's and during the 80's. Years that have also served to expose body horror films that are iconic to the present.
Very slowly, the list and characteristics of the subgenre were expanded to include certain films about werewolves that came to compile the terror of bodily transformation, along with sexual impulses and needs; Everything, without leaving aside classic themes such as zombies, infections or epidemics.
Some critics may also define the horror of the body as viscerally repulsive, but, although initially it does not seem so, these degenerations have a justification and a reason for "being". Not everything is random.
Undoubtedly, the horror of the body defies the resistance of any spectator, but it is a subgenre that is worth exploring, especially when it is possible to have masters of cinema who have managed to make memorable stories and who, to this day, consider as masterpieces.
To speak of corporal horror is to mention automatically David Cronenberg, whose films The Fly, Rabid or Videodrome are perfect examples of corporal horror.
Brian Yuzna, is other director, producer and screenwriter of independent horror films who has brought to the big screen adaptations of manga and several works of fiction writer, H.P. Lovecraft (an important pioneer in the Horror Body and writing of terror in general, something ahead of its time) In fact, Yuzna was a producer of From Beyond and Re-Animator, and director of its sequel, among others.
And, to give it a different touch, the historian, scriptwriter and also director, Frank Henenlotter has also been one of the great pillars for the development of body horror, especially when combined with a bit of humor. Suggestions? Without a doubt, Brain Damage and Bad Biology. I can't fail to mention John Carpenter and an 80s classic within the subgenre: The Thing.
The human being will always look for something to entertain, have fun or be frightened, because we are really curious and we are always thinking about the possibilities that something has to happen and what would happen if that something happened, that's why the capacity for creation and creativity has been increased , to bring "to the real world" different events, or things that are only able to exist or occur in our imagination. And as many people have learned, the human mind can arrive dark, creepy and strange, but at the same time very interesting and peculiar, each mind is a different world and it is not bad to express oneself in different ways, creating beautiful, functional or useless things. creepy, how far do you resist terror ?. As a curious fact, the closest we have to the body horror in real life, are the different perforations or deformations that a person can do surgically or manually.

STOPI usually horror movies and themes in general so I didn't know about body horror. It does sound interesting and not that scary the way you talk about it :) From your illustration I can see that you're a big fan of this genre (as you also mentioned).
I like them all. They are scary and creepy but somehow beautiful too. My favorite is the last one. It's a very interesting concept. I wonder how she perceives what she sees with so many eyes :) And that worm thing growing from underneath her dress gives me shivers... Especially the fact that it has its own head :)
Thank you for sharing! It was interesting to learn something new about horror genre!
Hii, thanks for comment, I like that you liked my post, I like the genre but definitavamente I can not stand bloody scenes or exploded bodies, for them in the illustrations I made there is no blood, just deformations, thanks for commenting on which one you liked the most ! Interesting post. I am not fan of horror of any kind. I have watched most of the classics though, just to have an informed opinion rather than just echo what others say.
I have little tolerance for gratuitious gore (the human centipede, for instance). Yet, body horror is in a way part of human reality. I can appreciate an artistic offer on the matter.
This art has some comic book qualityand that makes the horror depicted more digestable.
Thanks for commenting, I must say that films like the human centipede cause me a bit of disgust in themselves, when the blood is united with excrement and others I feel very disgusted, but somehow the corporal deformations seem interesting to me. Receive my good vibes!
