Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1930, was with Roy Lichtestein, Andy Warhol and Richard Hamilton one of the founders of Pop Art.

He devoted himself to studies in painting and sculpture, one of his fixations as an artist was the different appreciations on the American flag, as well as the use of other elements such as maps, study at the University of South Carolin del Sur, then left to go to New York, where he studied graphic design at the Parsons School of Design. But again he left studies, this time because he was enlisted to go to Sendai Japan for the Korean War.

In 1958 the gallery owner Leo Castelli, discovered him with some paintings and invited him to make what would be his first exhibition where Alfred Barr director and founder of MoMA in New York, amazed at the work of Johns, buys four paintings and thus the success was unstoppable.

After a repeated dream with the flag of his country, he decides to paint it in different ways, it is one of his best known works, many tried to criticize the painter's work as neo given but in the end remained as one of the founders of pop art.

In the 60s he managed to coincide with some artists of the time, as Andy Warhol or Bruce Naumann, which made his influence in the art world rise even more, here is where he begins to make repetitive paintings consisting of 3 panels, giving much obsession to the repetition made with different techniques.

One of the most notable examples is found in one of his most famous works, the engraving "Ale Cans", which he made in 1964 and a few years earlier had done in sculpture.

In the 80s he made a change in his style, presented a series entitled Seasons, for each season of the year, were 4 and for the first time includes the human figure in one of his paintings. The presentation was made at the MoMA in New York, and then that same series traveled to Spain to be exhibited at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid in 1987.

I prefer to see it as an object of study within the parameters of pop art, even studying it as a collective is even richer than taking advantage of it on an individual level. It is an expensive mistake to think that art is limited to individual creation, when one does not understand art from a cultural point of view in order to analyze it from a broader point of view.
