Hi Steemit family!

Mark Rothko, the Disturbance of Abstract Expressionism

Today I bring you a publication dedicated to one of the most controversial pictorial genres of all time, abstract expressionism, hated by some, loved by others. In if it is a genre a little complex to understand in what really wants to express, the criticism specialized in art has taken all kinds of essays and reports up to links with the CIA, I personally do not like this genre very much because it discredits a little creativity and has to be monotonous and more of theory than to express something real. Today is the turn of Mark Rothko one of the top representatives of this contemporary movement. Come with me to learn more about the life and work of this artist.

Mark Rothko is a painter of Russian origin, born on September 25, 1903, in Daugavpils for that then Russian empire, grew up in an intellectual environment thanks to his pharmaceutical father, was also irradiated by the Jewish religiosity professed by his family nucleus. By the time the Russian revolution began to take shape, his father sent Mark Rothko and his brothers to the United States so that they would not be linked to war or recruited into the tsarist army.

Thanks to the influence of his family he was able to develop in music, painting and as a great orator, so little by little he got into what would be his lifestyle, in 1921 he got a scholarship at Yale University but for reasons beyond his performance canceled his scholarship the following year, this fact made Mark Rothko completely change plans, devoting himself to various jobs to continue studying.

However, two years later he decided to abandon his studies in order to dedicate himself to art. He moved to New York City to be in contact with the artistic movements that arose at that time, and in 1925 he resumed his studies but this time directed to art. He studies New School of Design and in the famous Art Students League, already in 1928, he is making his first exhibitions, to come from an orthodox Jewish family never obtained the support of his family that he saw as a waste of time to continue investing money and time in the art.

But Mark Rothko does not give up and by 1933 he gives his first great individual exhibition in the famous contemporary art gallery of New York obtaining excellent critics by the gallery owners. At the beginning of his career he was not very abstract but as time went by abstraction invaded his being and became his exclusive muse. He never liked to be linked to an artistic genre, but if his art was pure abstract expressionism, even repetitive at some point took the tendency to paint pictures with layers of paint that ended up being a square.

This is the other side of the story because much of the world critique did not give a good verdict on Mark Rothko and his monotonous and repetitive paintings, but at this time almost everything was like that as his colleague Pollock became the number one star and promoter of abstract expressionism regardless of the critics of his art.

In his technique this deep studies of field painting that suppose the because of his paintings although also the same painter gave him psychological characteristics when saying that his paintings caused different sensations in the spectator. Another interesting thing is its curator and financier Peggy Guggenheim, a multimillionaire and museum owner who was practically like the Midas king, turning everything into gold.

Already by the 1960s, the painter began to suffer depressions due to alcohol abuse, he would even bring that discomfort to painting ending his last period as the black period painting with black and the like.
On February 25, 1970, Mark Rothko put an end to his life, a product of a mixture of antidepressants with alcohol.
