Hi Steemit family!

Today I bring you the life and work of a multifaceted artist whose political, ethical and artistic dedication made her one of the most representative women of Mexico and the world, multifaceted is not only recognized as a painter or sculptor, she is also recognized for being an excellent playwright and puppeteer, I am talking about Dolores Velásquez Rivas, known in the art world as Lola Cueto.

source

Lola Cueto was born in Mexico in Azcapotzalco on March 2, 1897, when she was only 12 years old she started studying art at the San Carlos Academy, where she met different artists with whom she coordinated the creation of the first open-air art school. In 1919 she married German Cueto and moved to Paris until 1932 where they absorbed many things from the artistic movements of the time.

source

Upon their return to Mexico, they formed a series of artist friends, among them the muralist Aurora Reyes, the league of writers and revolutionary artists, beginning the history of the theater of Cueto.

source

In 1940 she returned to study at the San Carlos Academy but this time she dedicated herself to learning engraving is one of the most outstanding students, both to receive an invitation from the Mexico City college and to give art classes.

source

Already at that time was recognized as one of the best female artists in different disciplines such as fine arts, was a weaver craftswoman, in addition to her extensive career as an alphabetizer or educator consecrating her life to the creation of 3 major companies that achieved their educational mission didactic, llamas Rin-Rin, El Nahual, and Colorín, all were active in the show and functions of puppet theater in rural spaces, where they promoted popular art and characters that became life in the villages all creations of the same artist.

source

All this action had a positive impact on the work of the artist and especially for the country, managed to position the Mexican culture in all parts of the world even more than Diego Rivera and Frida khalo, also precisely these two artists were influenced by Lola Cueto taking her art to other parts of the world.

source

Some of their most emblematic works are their masks made of plaster and cardboard where some of the most important features of Mexican culture are shown, and basically, everything revolves around it, the making and habitual manufacture of crafts, Mexican popular art represented through works of puppets, or through traditionally decorated tapestries, popular toys.

source

But its success was not destined to Mexico alone, its masks considered by international critics as abstract art was exhibited in Spain, Holland, France and the United Kingdom. Leaving the name of Mexico very high, as well as showing a little about what the original culture in Mexico is like.

source

Already for the year of 1964 where the second biennial of sculpture of Mexico was organized, the work of Lola was recognized with an honorable mention, is interesting the great contribution that has left the Mexican culture in the world, few towns have systematized their culture turning it into a product of quality with national identity, another similar country is Cuba that also spends infinite human resources in maintaining its system of traditions.
I wish all countries had the same willingness to fight against the globalization that has done so much damage to universal culture.

Really charming the artwork of that great lady. It has all the flavor of Latin American popular art... I made a long time ago an audiovisual record of creators for children, some of whom have already passed away... I hope I can get that work back... I know you're going to love it...

Greetings from Venezuela ♥
