Contest - @surfermarly logo entry.
In between doing commisioned logo's for @jonny-clearwater and not being able to fully commit to the effort one of those requires, I decided to make something for @surfermarly's contest. While there are already many excellent entries, I still figured there was room for more. She wants a logo for her blog, that would lend itself to al sorts of use and branding.
Having recently bought a proper sketchbook and being sort of tied to the couch on account of recuperating from this. This gave me much oppertunity to do some sketching, which resulted in this (pardon the poor photo)
Initial Concept
The initial concept is based on her standing in front of her surfboard (some research determined she has a rather minimalistic design on her surfboard, mainly a single line running down the center)
Being a fan of negative space, I decided to use the surfboard as main item and have both @surfermarly and her boards designline as negative space cutting out of it. There are also some other elements related to surfer imagery and theme. Mainly a cresting wave and the Hibiscus flowers that tend to be related with hawaii which in turn breaths surfing.
The Development
After properly converting this to vector design in Affinity Designer, I was at this stage.
The Final Logo
For some reason though that just wasn't doing it for me. I wanted it to be simpler. The most powerful logo's can be used with a single color (black, white or whatever color). They're also easily recognisable and iconic.
Therefor, i decided to do away with the extra's. The Surfboard & Cutout Marley was as Iconic as it was going to be. It can be used with our even without the text (for instance as a brand logo on a shirt). I simplified the hair as well. Less is more as per minimalistic design. I also switched colors, to reflect her favorite color (or so I read, and then while researching I also noticed it was the color of her surfshorts). Anyways, long story short. this is the final entry.
