Crumpled Paper

in #art10 years ago

Drawing a crumpled piece of paper is one of the most challenging subjects I've ever tried to draw.

I took a drawing class in which this was the requirement. I chose to draw my paper using a graphite pencil. I crumpled a sheet of paper as my reference, and taped it to the wall next to the paper I was to be drawing on. If my memory serves correctly, the paper was a fairly heavy rectangular sheet of about 24 x 46 inches. This drawing took a total of five hours to complete, and the final product was imbued with a sort of ethereal feel to it, due to losing my reference, having to create a new one, and then marrying the two references onto the page. I gained a new understanding for paper itself.

And it was a whole lot of fun.
