Speed Painting

We played a little game today in my Painting and Drawing class which consists of making speed paintings with 5 minutes allowed to draw the composition and 10 to paint it with watercolor. I am lucky enough to work close to a library so I came with an aboundance of National Geographic magazines. While the students carefully chose their reference I felt obliged to work with the handicap of working with pages I opened at random. I warmly suggested they work multiple assignments on the same page and to unify them in a single composition and I am thrilled by the work we generated together.

This one is my own. The photograph I used as reference for the eye was blurry so it was exciting to work with an imprecise wet on wet technique.

I love how Lindsay created proportions that work together from 3 different images. The light background made it very forgiving to layer the giraffe and the woman on top of it.

This student enjoys using thick paint as you can see on the rose but she can also paint thin like on the leopard. This shows great versatility.

Ann has been making so much progress. She started from nothing and look at her now observing negative space and understanding shapes. This is truly a rare moment of pride.

This is a little snipit from Cartoon and Comics which was right before. It’s good practice to fill up entire pages of facial features in different styles and expressions. It gets the creative juices flowing. The two present characters were made with features selected at random.

All in all everyone was focused so I could not ask for more!
