Older And Creating It part 3: Born of a Comic Jam
Such a big part of blogging is making the most out of the tools at your disposal. Given that I do not have access to a scanner, this means finding ways to turn my cell phone into one which is precisely how I found Snapseed, an app by Google which is entirely free.
During Senior’s week 2018, Older and Creating it, Mariko Kurahashi was showcased on more or less hidden walls of the exhibition, with only an arrow as a clue in order to find them. It was right behind the collage wall which I previously covered, featured only for the most adventurous among our audience who was to be rewarded by the soft natural lighting of the area.
The Adventures of Hanya was created during a comic jam I held for one of my Sketching and Drawing classes. It is a type of comic book improv where you can either start a page or pick one from the pile to continue the comics. Mariko started and finished the page. I did the third panel so I am proud of my contribution to her Autobiographical journey as a Canadian citizen originally from Japan. Her granddaughter served as inspiration for the character of Hanya.
I talked about Snapseed earlier. It will do wonders for featuring your art with its perspective feature which is why I made the video above. You can see how it turned poorly (but evenly) lit photos displayed on a wall into what you see here. The sheets of paper were taped to the walls with masking tape and some pages were even peeling from the top. Aside from the free tool, the tilt tool (which is not covered in the video) was instrumental in achieving these results with those unruly pages.
I also cover a workaround for the screen recording bug regarding lost audio at import (the preview works fine) for IOS 11, mostly in the description of the video. I read on the apple support forum that TechSmith’s Capture app works fine. I just tried it and that is not the case, I have the same issue. Also, a big shoutout to @roundbeargames who encouraged me in my screen recording endeavor. The sky is the limit but I’ll start with green screen ;)
A late bloomer in the art of manga, our delightful author knows not to underestimate the simplicity of life events as far as its potential to create powerful narratives. In this page, we indentify to Hanya’s carefree mood and how it turns to insecurity. The fact the hair curls up on her head expresses the child’s inner turmoil in such a funny way.
By now, Mariko has stayed after class multiple times to get my feedback on the latest updates which I give enthusiastically. Make sure you get the mass at the back of the head right and think of the hair as a single mass, I would say. Or something like, I love the way you add special effects with movement lines and stippling, how cool would it be to add onomatopoeia to reference manga culture? She was always so thankful. Sometimes we got to talking about her husband’s cancer and how difficult and trying it was for her to support him. She is such a dignified woman with something positive to say about every situation, and so she focused on the love she still has for her husband. I felt special for the fact that she trusted me to talk about her life and I grew tremendously from being in contact with both of them. If all goes well, I will see her again soon!
I had Nato when I was in Kyoto. I pretended to like it with all my might because I wanted to honor the flawless hospitality of Gojo Youth Hostel. It’s an acquired test.
