STREET ART #58 – Street art is developing fast in Aalborg, Denmark
Aalborg has a street art scene that has changed the apperance of the city within just a few years. Since the first street art festivals, Out in the Open (2014) and the We Aart festival (2015) the city now has approx. 65 -70 murals. Here are some of the newest done during Out in the Open 2019.
Out in the Open
In Aalborg the mural project Out in the Open has been curated by Kirk Gallery since 2014. Thanks to this project Aalborg has become a city with a great street art scene. Over the past five years many street artists have painted large murals here. For the fifth edition in april 2019 some of the invited artists were: Vhils (Portugal) Oliver Vernon (USA) Seth (France), Telmo Miel (Netherlands) and Joram Roukes (Netherland). There might have been some more, but the above mentioned were the ones I manged to find last time I was in Aalborg.
«Exquisite Waste of Time»
Done by the Dutch duo Telmo Miel. The building is a factory and the mural is done on the wall facing one of the main streets. The duo consists of the artists Templo Pieper and Miel Krutzmann. These two have been working together for a long time. With this mural the duo wants to question whether or not our busy day to day life is good in the end.
«Final Cut»
Joram Roukes a Dutch artist is behind this large mural. What characterizes his work, is his overwhelming wall and oil painting in bright colors. His work often reflects on the day to day life. This one is found in a backyark in the center of Aalborg.
Oliver Vernon is the artist behind this large, colorful piece right in the center of Aalborg. He was born in New York, but has exhibited his work in cities across the United States. An amazing piece to study in detail. Vernon is one of the icons of modern abstraction. To me this is a beautiful piece. Colorful, detailed and vibrant.
The Portuguese artist Vhils aka Alexandre Farto, born in 1987 is behind this amazing piece. This is not a painting. He has a totally unique style for which he is world famous. What he is doing, is that has carved out of walls with chiseled strokes, where each individual layer creates the necessary contrast and depth to put soul into a piece. He carves his motives out in walls. He calls his project «Scratshing the Surface». He has been using this technique since 2007 and he has more than 90 pieces spread around different countries in the world. This was the first time I have seen his work. I became a fan right away.

Seth or Julien Malland also called Clobe painter. He has done so many colorful pieces around the world. Seth paints curious children. The reaction he intends to provoke with his artwork is to keep our child’s soul. His work can be seen all over the world. Part of his work as a globe-painter is documented in his book «Extra Muros».

Very cool artworks. It's nice to see that Portugal is represented, too. My favourite pieces are from Seth, simple and beautiful. 😊
Yeah, Seth is one of my favourite artists. But Vhils did surprise me because of his unique style. I hope to see more ... In september I will be visiting Lisbon...I have heard it's a city of great street art, so I better put on my most comfortable shoes!! I will go 14 days to the Azores and then I will be back in Lisbon.Want to see Porto, taste wine in the Douro valley.....
Very cool murals in Aalborg done by international street artists. I saw Vhils' works in Porto and one done by Seth near to me home in Montreal... The mural done by Vernon is stunning. Thanks for sharing all this pics.

I really like the one from Vhils. It's so different from the rest. I hope to see more of him. Agree on Vernon's. It's gorgeous :)
The white wall with bricks showing through is a pretty original looking technique. Kind of like an etching.
I have never seen that kind of technique before, but I was impressed. It's really cool.
