Wabi Sabi Apartment by architect and designer Sergey Makhno

in #art7 years ago

This apartment was designed by and for Sergey Makhno and his family. The dwelling merges pieces of Ukrainian design with Japanese minimalism.

Having been connected to Japanese culture since he was 12 years old, Makhno wanted a calm and comfortable space with a natural palette of colors to evoke a meditative atmosphere. The earth and wood brown, warm tones and greenery can be spotted in all rooms, helping to create a timeless design. On the ground floor, the walls were removed to open the kitchen, dining room and living room and become a single large space.

Makhno brought together the four elements - earthen clay walls, burned artwork for fire, water painting and open space for air - creating a sense of balance. The walls were covered with a natural clay using an old technique often found in Ukrainian houses. Most of the furniture was created by Makhno himself, like lamps, tables and sofas.
