Useful Resources When Learning to Draw - Part 2 - Types of Drawing Paper
Catch up with 'Useful Resources When Learning to Draw - Part 1' here.
Change of plan today for Part 2 of my drawing resources posts. I had planned to discuss pencils next but comments on Part 1 showed a need for a post on paper.
Types of Drawing Paper
The type of paper you work with matters.
Acid-free paper lasts well without yellowing.
100% cotton rags papers are best and can take heavy treatment.
Paper surfaces are either rough or smooth.
A Charcoal and Chalk Drawing on Rough Surface Paper.
Rough surfaces cause a pencil or charcoal to drag and make your hand more sensitive to the tactile qualities of the process than smooth surface paper.
Smooth surface paper tens to be silky and help with a fluid, easy handling style.
Other types of paper you can draw on include brown paper, textured paper and wove paper. These all give added dimensions to your drawings.
Look at this fabulous effect from using brown wrapping paper.
I love the effect of drawing hair on textured paper!

Wove paper is made using a woven wire 'cloth' like a fine sieve to dry it. It has a smooth surface that suits ink drawing as it is very close woven. It's also good for realistic pencil drawing.
Look After Your Paper
Take care to store all paper away from humid places, direct sunlight and heat.
Don't place heavy objects on paper, avoid rolling it and store it flat if possible.
