Ralph Albert Blakelock
The above painting is my favourite by Ralph Albert Blakelock. It's interesting to see how some people lived in those days.
Ralph Albert Blakelock was an American artist who lived from 1847 to 1919. He usually painted landscapes.
He was a self-taught artist, using a trial and error method.
To make ends meet, Blakelock, who had nine children, had to sell his paintings for much less than they were worth. This eventually caused Blakelock to suffer from mental illness.
At the end of his career, he was the victim of forgers which was devastating to him.
Now, I will show you some more of his artwork.
Blakelock painted a series of similar artworks called 'Moonlight'. Above is my favourite one. It was once sold at the highest price ever paid for the work of a living American artist at that time. It's a shame he never benefitted from his work's popularity.
Again, Blakelock painted several views of Indian camps. He used to tour around viewing them and making records in his sketchbook then he would create a painting back home.
I really like the colours and detail in the above landscape by Blakelock. I couldn't find the artwork's name. Perhaps someone who reads this will let me know.
I leave you with Middletown Homeopathic Hospital, Blakelock's Home from the 1890's to 1915 when he had mental illness:

What a wonderful painter, I love all those paintings. Sad he ended up mentally ill. Him and his wife had nine children, and trying to live off and artists wages, had to have been real tuff. Wonderful article Dee thank you so much ❣️
