Look at the brilliant sea in this painting by J M W Turner! When you think they didn't have photography to take reference shots, it's incredibly good. I'm not a great fan of Turner's work but I do love this painting.

Joseph Mallord William Turner lived from1775 to 1851.

He was born a Londoner and moved to the coast temporarily when he was 11 years old. Later, when he became rich from his paintings, he lived in the posh area of Harley Street in London.

Turner was a painter and engraver.

In the mid-1790s he adopted the way of life that suited him. He toured around in summer and painted in his studio in winter.

Until 1796 Turner painted with watercolours. Then he also exhibited oils, so, with the engraving, he was multi-media talented.

Now I will show you some of his artwork.

A lot of J M W Turner's work is dark because he liked to play with the light in his paintings. I prefer the sunny scenes like the one above. I can just imagine Turner sitting way up high to paint the above picture.

'The Storm (Shipwreck)', 1823, by J M W Turner

The above painting astonishes me to see the boat packed with passengers. I expect shipwrecks were commonplace in those days.

'Harewood House from the North East', 1790, by JMW Turner

Yorkshire Life

Stately Homes have always been good money-spinners for painters. J M W Turner capitalized on this and became wealthy.

I leave you with a painting entitled 'Interior of Turner's Gallery: the Artist showing his Works' c.1851, by Turner's contemporary George Jones

Wow, love his artwork you’ve shown here! I just wonder who framed his work. On the last painting those frames around his artwork were pieces of artwork in themselves. I don’t know if they make frames like that anymore wow! His paintings where quite large, all of them it looks like. Very interesting I’m formation @deemarshall thank you❣️

Yes, they still make them in specialist framing shops and workshops. I had a small one made for an embroidery I did.

Thank you for commenting and upvoting. I see art-huntress read it too.
