This oil painting is based on a series of photographs by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher. They have managed to portray various aspects of African culture with the lens of their camera, giving relevance to the portrait of men women and children. Through those documentary images you can see some significant aspects that are part of a lot of African ceremonies in which it is usual to see the use of trappings for special moments, as well as corporal modifications adorned with connoted jewels of symbolism. Also, body painting is generally used in those ceremonial celebrations.

The woman with the painted face had a particular beauty that I was interested in representing through painting. The challenge in this case was to copy the paint that covers her face and that generates a visual texture without losing the naturalness, delicacy and strength of her expression. Regarding the choice of color palette that I used on the canvas, I was interested in experimenting with combinations in which there was a mediation between the real photographic image and my interpretation of color as a communicative element through the language of the painting.

Esta pintura al óleo está basada en una serie de fotografías de Carol Beckwith y Angela Fisher, quienes han logrado retratar diversos aspectos de la cultura africana con la lente de su cámara, dando relevancia al retrato de hombres mujeres y niños. A través de aquellas imágenes documentales se pueden ver algunos aspectos significativos que forman parte de gran cantidad de ceremonias africanas en las cuales es usual ver el uso de atavíos para momentos especiales, así como modificaciones corporales adornadas con joyas connotadas de simbolismo. También, la pintura corporal se usa generalmente en estas celebraciones ceremoniales.

La mujer con la cara pintada tenía una belleza particular que me interesaba representar a través de la pintura. El desafío en este caso fue copiar la pintura que cubre su rostro y que genera una textura visual sin perder la naturalidad, la delicadeza y la fuerza de su expresión.
En cuanto a la elección de la paleta de colores que utilicé sobre el lienzo me interesaba experimentar con combinaciones en las cuales hubiera una mediación entre la imagen real fotográfica y mi interpretación del color como elemento comunicativo a través del lenguaje pictórico.
