In the face of the traumatic experiences of totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century, George Orwell's 1984 book warned the world of the dangers of abuse of power, technology, and the suppression of freedom and information. But the dystopia that comes closest to understanding what we are experiencing today is Aldous Huxley's "happy world."
The system outlined in Orwell's text is based on censorship, repression and annulment of individuality, while Huxley relies on sedative technology and exacerbated consumption "much more similar to what we are living in Western society. Something similar to the apathy, the dispersion and the disinterest produced by the distraction and the egoism of the culture of the entertainment In our society the repression of a political movement is not necessary because the reality like entertainment takes us to a state of passivity, indolence and Ignorance that makes us harmless to the system.
What Huxley feared was that there was no reason to forbid writing because no one would want to read. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that would reduce us to passivity and selfishness. Orwell feared that the truth would hide us. Huxley feared that the truth would drown in a sea of irrelevance.
It's difficult to define what is happening to us today but surely has much narcissism and hyperindividualism of the digital age, the world of false news, the infinite layers of filters.
In a truly happy world, the most intriguing distractions like violence, drugs, sex and luxury are deliberately used as instruments of public media.
Ignorance
On the other hand, slightly different from the world of entertainment, we have something similar: religion. Both are distractions and can become, as in Marx's phrase, "the opium of the people" and, therefore, a threat to freedom.
Only those who carefully monitor the system are those who can maintain their freedoms. A society that spends a large part of its time not in the present, not in the here and now will find it difficult to resist the invasions of those who control and manipulate society.
P.D The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is always struggling, recently they wrote an open letter to the technology community that said: "The threat algorithm to the internet only changed in its words in the current US administration" Please take a look. Link
