"I define Dakar as a kind of" capital "of Africa, Dakar is modernity, Dakar is difficulty, Dakar is warm, Dakar is cool, Dakar is a beach, Dakar is everything, it is a set. it's easy, because it's difficult to count a city, because you can not be objective, "says Senegalese photographer Mamadou Gomis.
For a decade, Gomis has worked hand in hand with the Spanish documentalist Pere Ortín. Together they have shaped the images that now make up the Dakar exhibition, a look, produced by Casa África and Altaïr Magazine (the travel culture magazine of which Gomis is director).
Open to the public until next March 5 in the World Gallery of space B The Travel Brand Xperience in Barcelona, ​​the exhibition includes 37 photographs and two videos that revolve around three thematic axes: daily life, the traditional Senegalese struggle and the fashion as a vital element of its inhabitants to show the beauty in the streets of this city.
In turn, the result is the combination of two different points of view: that of the local narrator and that of the foreigner who feels fascinated by this African city. "That chaos with harmonious, attractive and cruel appearance, slow traffic and light walking, where it is not necessary to dream, you just have to open your eyes," says the diptych presented by the exhibition.
"Dakar is as complex and contradictory as life, a kind of metaphor or allegory, if one wants, over all the complexities of life, of the human being in an urban environment, with all its greatnesses and all its miseries, with all its lavish moments and their nefarious moments, but in that contradiction is where, from my point of view, life is generated, "adds Gomis, who also acts as curator of this photographic journey.
