El término Origami proviene de las palabras japonesas "Ori" (doblar) y "Kami" (papel), aunque según la Real Academia Española, este arte es denominado Papiroflexia o Cocotología, y si bien estos términos no están muy difundidos fuera de España, en el resto del mundo por lo general se usa el termino "Origami", y cada vez este arte toma mas popularidad, en especial en los últimos 20 años con la llegada del internet, donde fue posible encontrar diagramas complejos para la construcción y el plegado de figuras nuevas y totalmente complejas.

El arte de plegar papel tiene sus origenes en China por el sigo I d.C. y llegó a Japón en el siglo VI integrándose de lleno a su cultura y tradición. Pero fue hasta a penas el año 794, en el período Heian, que el origami formó parte primordial de las ceremonias de la nobleza ya que plegar papel era un lujo que solo se podían dar nobles y aristócratas económicamente acomodados. Entre el 1338 y el 1573 en el período Muromachi, el papel se volvió bastante barato y ya las personas pertenecientes a clases mas bajas de la sociedad japonesa podían adquirirlo, fue entonces cuando se arraigó este arte como distinción de una clase social a otra, cada una teniendo un estilo de origami distinto.

Entre el 1603 y el 1867 ocurre la total democratización del origami, en el período Tokugawa, época de la cual data las primeras documentaciones de las bases de ave y la base de rana en el libro Senbazuru Orikata.

The art of folding paper has its origins in China by the 1st century A.D. and arrived in Japan in the 6th century, integrating fully with its culture and tradition. But it was hardly until the year 794, in the Heian period, that origami was a fundamental part of the nobility ceremonies since folding paper was a luxury that could only be given by economically well-off nobles and aristocrats. Between 1338 and 1573 in the Muromachi period, the paper became quite cheap and already people belonging to lower classes of Japanese society could acquire it, it was then that this art took root as a distinction from one social class to another, each one having a different origami style.

Between 1603 and 1867 the total democratization of origami occurs, in the Tokugawa period, at which time the first documentation of the bird bases and the frog base in the Senbazuru Orikata book dates.
