The Bullfight

Thanks largely to Hemingway, bullfighting is deemed typically Spanish. For the most part bullfighting has largely disappeared in Spain, with some moves to ban it completely.  It is now largely a tourist attraction more than  it is a Spanish popular sport. Here is the sequence...

1. Marking out the main components. On this occasion I use pinpricks to mark out key golden mean sections on the paper, and then mark them in with water soluble pencil, sometimes referred to as watercolour pencils. I have marked out the location of the bullfighter's head, where the cape is going to be located, and the general components of the bull.

2. The general location and relationship of all the components of the scene are now located on the page. I have also marked in two banderillas (little spears the bullfighter must stick in the bull) to indicate at what stage of the fight this scene would typically be taking place.

3. Putting some "body" into the picture. Essentially the darker areas will be where I work texture into the scene.

4. Beginning to paint in the texture, thinking about shade and shadow at this point, and how to indicate the movement of the figures.

5. Added some highlights and I used a technical drawing pen to mark in some key detail for further development.

6. Specific areas worked over to give depth and texture to the finished work.

I hope you found this post, and the watercolour interesting. I hope to have another post up today, some sketches from around the village of Naredo de Fenar in mainland Spain, a place I spend my summer months in.

Fantastic work as always!

Your comment is much appreciated.

BRAVO... on many levels, thanks for sharing it and the process.

I really like your process. what program are you using?

This is traditional pen and paper stuff, or at least pencil, watercolour, and paper stuff in this case. I took the photographs of work in progress using my Honor 7 phone by putting the picture on the floor under the table, and placing the phone over the edge of the table, I get as much floor in the photograph as I do picture. The Honor 7 has a 20 Mbyte capture, which I then edit using Zoner Photo Studio 18 to crop down to the canvas or watercolour page. It works pretty well, and does not spoil the flow of the work.

I am actually trying to learn to use Corel Painter 2017, which I received this christmas, with a heavy hint that there is very little room for painting in the flat I now live in. However, all I have managed to produce is a few Abstracts as I have yet to buy a tablet to work with. As it stands at the moment, the learning curve at age 60 seems a bit too much for a hobbyist painter to solely benefit from the space saved by not having to have to store materials.

Love the movement in this one! I had CorelPainter, but it was somehow corrupted and I haven't been able to afford a new copy yet. I also have an Intuos drawing tablet (a Christmas gift from a couple of years ago), which is awesome. Enjoy using yours - I'm a bit green with envy, lol. :)

Many thanks for your kind comment. I am still wondering what kind of tablet to get. I certainly can't draw anything with a mouse. Well I did manage to produce some fluid come wavy kind of threads, but it was without design, so I called it an abstract for want of a better word.
