How to Create Awesome Art using a Camera, Food Colouring and Water

in #art7 years ago

This is a super fun project where the whole family can take part. Most children really love being creative and this is one project I am sure they would enjoy, and any lover of photography and or artist can experiment with new media to create artistic photos where no matter what you do, no two photos will ever be the same.

So, are you ready to get started? Then here is what you will need.

  1. Vegetable oil
  2. Glass container
  3. Water
  4. Digital camera with tripod, or cell phone depending on how serious you are about this.

There are two ways of doing this. Our first attempt was on a glass table top, which will result in a flat 2D effect. If you want to do a 3D effect then you can use a large clear glass or vase filled with water. Make sure the glass has no blemishes because the camera will pick them up.
Be sure you have ample light and a white backdrop behind the vase or glass. If you decide to use a glass table top then place some white paper underneath the glass.
If you decide to use the table top then I would not advise you to use the oil, it will be messy to clean. Clean the glass and removed all other objects and then pour a very small amount of water onto the glass. Then very carefully add the drops of colourant and start taking photos as the colour/s start to disperse in the water.

If you choose to use the glass or vase for a more 3D type of effect you can use the oil if you wish, but you don’t have to. Whichever way you do it will result in a totally different effect so trying both ways can be fun and creative.
Once your vase or glass is in place, with a white backdrop, you can simply add the drops of colour directly to the water. Using multiple colours such as red, blue and green creates a beautiful array of tones and shades.

When you use the oil the effect will be somewhat different. Pour a small amount of oil into a small bowl and add your choice of colours. You will notice the colours remain as small droplets in the oil and will sink to the bottom. Once you have added all your colours, give the oil a brisk stir, and then pour the oil into the vase or glass. The oil will rise to the surface and after a few seconds, the colour droplets will start to disperse very slowly and make their way to the bottom of the glass container. This is when your camera or cell phone should be ready to start capturing some magnificent formations and colour blends.

I hope this stirred your sense of creativity as well as your curiosity and that you will give this a try. If you do, please share the photos of your experiments with all of us to see.

Have fun being creative, until next time
