HOW TO DRAW ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU: by @charm29. Materials used, and step by step directions.

Hello everyone!
Today I am going to be running you through the steps on drawing Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I believe everyone should know who this great man is, or at least have an idea.
Let me use this medium to say that Desmond Tutu is a leading factor in the elimination of apartheid in South Africa. A brief deviation...

Desmond Mpilo Tutu OMSG CH (born 7 October 1931) is a South African Anglican cleric and theologian known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was the Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then the Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first black man to hold the position. Theologically, he sought to fuse ideas from black theology with African theology; politically, he identifies as a socialist. (Cited from Wikipedia)

Please take care to note that the image above is NOT the image that I will be drawing. That is just a picture to show those who may not know whom Desmond Tutu is. Let's get started!

MATERIALS USED:

  1. Staedtler: Mars Lumograph (8B, 6B, H)
  2. Rotring Mechanical Engineering Pencil
  3. Tikky 20 eraser
  4. Alabaster Cardboard Paper
  5. Tissue paper, cutton buds
  6. Plain white paper (to avoid smudging)
  7. A bottle of Coca Cola! (I'm an addict) Haha... 😉

I began by first cutting out my paper to the size I wanted. For this, it's an A4 (printing paper) sized drawing. Then using my mechanical pencils, I started sketching. Trying not to apply too much pressure on my hands, so that erasing becomes easier. I sketched the whole outline of the face first, before adding in the eyes, nose, mouth, etc.

After sketching, I drew in the details of the eye, and shaded the right portion of the face. I am not left handed, by the way..

Continue to add in the necessary details in the artwork. I shaded the other eye. Desmond Tutu has blue eyes, and because I do not make use of colors, I like to use cutton buds to shade in the pupils, to give the effect of colored eyes!

For the rims of the glasses, I made use of General's Charcoal pencil, to make it darker than the other parts of the drawing. Take a sip of Coke! 🙌

I have to confess that I am new at this, I have never had to technically explain every single step on my drawings. I just draw. I don't give explanations for them, so if there's anything I am missing out on, kindly leave a comment! For the lines on the skin, I used a very sharpened 8B pencil to create grooves, making it look like age lines. Now I am nowhere near as good as I want to be, but with constant practice I hope I get there.

Completed!
I tend to get very lazy when it comes to drawing the clothing. For the face I take my sweet time, but once I am done with that, I get cold feet with the clothes. I just basically used a brush dipped in lead to blend out all the areas of the material. This is a portrait of Desmond Tutu! You like? I know I do... 😉

Thanks!
