Steampunk Whale
Greetings Fellow Humans,
Today I built a whale. I took some inspiration from blue whales and humpback whales for this piece. Normally for these simple pieces I pretty much stick to found objects as much as possible, but nothing I had was going to create the striped underbelly I wanted. I ended up using 3/16 inch cold roll for the whole underside of the piece. A nice bonus of this is that the greater amount of empty space makes the underside look lighter, which is in keeping with the color scheme of the actual animal.
I started by with some clutch fingers, nuts, screws, 3/16 inch rod, and 3/8 inch rebar for a spine. It is a lot easier to fill in the rest of an animal if you can get the appendages, eyes, mouth, and other major parts oriented before worrying about the smaller details.
From there I just had to fill in the body.
After the sand blasting, patina, and waxing, I had this guy as a result:
