5 Impressionist Artists For People Interested In Impressionism

in #art9 years ago (edited)

I don't know why, but whenever I look at an impressionist painting I always feel a bit gloomy and nostalgic. Maybe its the clothing out of Victorian era novels, interesting looking people or just a longing to be part of their time that makes me feel nostalgic. Whatever it is I love impressionist art and I think that if you find it slightly interesting you should check out these 5 artists who you probably know of but might not have seen all of their work.

  1. Claude Monet (1840-1926) "Impression,Sunrise" (1872)

One of the founding fathers of the French Impressionist movement, Monet is one of the more famous, known for his Water Lilies series, but he has much more to offer than just that. In 1872 he painted Impression, Sunrise, which gave the movement its name and abstract looking style. Below is the painting that many consider started it all.

2 . Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) Luncheon of the Boating Party (1882)
Renior is also a French impressionist who had his start along side Monet during the movement, but rather than focus on inanimate subjects most of his most famous work focuses on people as seen in the painting below. His paintings are time pieces of late 19th century France, the people, the clothing, their lifestyles.

3 . Camille Pissaro (1830-1903) Boulevard Montmartre at Night (1897)
Camille Pissaro was not only an impressionist painter, but had foundations in other types of art as well and continued to join other post impressionist movements within the art communities. Unlike the others he was a Danish painter living in France at the time of the movement. He was a father figure to many future artists and his work is of pure genius. His paintings tended to be of landscapes and the common people of the time as stated by Renior his work was "Revolutionary". He had a way of painting lighting beautifully as seen below.

4 . Édouard Manet (1832-1883) A Bar at the Folies-Bergere (1882)

Manet lived a short but meaningful life in Paris and his work would go on to influence some of the greats like Picasso and even other Impressionists like Pissaro. His works mostly were of modern life of the time and his timeline of pieces shows a transition from traditional to Impressionist works until his death before the turn of the century. Right before his death, Manet painted this beautiful work of a bar scene in Paris.

5 . Edgar Degas (1834-1917) The Ballet Class 1873

The final artist on this list is Edgar Degas who although did much more than just paint, contributed heavily to the Impressionist movement. His most famous paintings featured French ballerinas of the time and scenes of life wealthy individuals might see within Paris at the time. The painting below "The Ballet Class" is a beautiful piece of work that signifies his curiosity and love of the ballet culture at the time.

Let me know if you enjoyed the post and I will do another part to this, or let me know if you want to see more paintings by these artists. I hope you enjoy these works as much as I do.
