It is a fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo around 1511. It illustrates the biblical episode of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam, the first man (according to biblical tradition). One can appreciate the contrast between the two entities thanks to their positions in the fresco: God floats, for he is celestial; Adam, on the other hand, is lying on earth because of his mortal condition. The work also shows a dynamic creator who seems to be descending at great speed, endowed with great power, against a static Adam, comfortably installed on the surface.

One aspect that gave rise to many theories is the presence of a female figure beside God. The creator surrounds her with his left arm, perhaps, protecting her or preparing her to reach the world. Many scholars claim that it is Eve, who is still waiting her turn to be created.

The compositional lines are diagonal and give the scene dynamism. Perspective is one of the great conquests of this sequence, since there is a three-dimensional capture that achieves with intricate and complicated points of escape and foreshortenings never before made in the history of painting.
