  • Why Study the early beginnings of arts in the Philippines?

The cultural heritage of the Filipinos is the wellspring of Philippines Arts. It reflects the artfulness of tthe people since prehistoric times. A study of the early beginnings of art in the country shows relation of the arts to the life and time out of which they sprung. By tracing the pathways of the arts in this country, we can acquire a richer and fuller understanding of the spirit and inner life of the people as reflected in their works of art.

  • Pre-Colonial Arts of the Philippines.

During the pre-colonial period, there was a lively cultural interchange between the Philippines and the other Asian countries through migration and trade. The presence of artifacts in pre-hispanic archaeological sites and the dates to which they are traced help reveal their origin in time and place. (Ortiz, 1996)

The earliest people who live and stayed in the country for the longest period of time had created their tools and artifacts from locally available materials, and as early as the prehistoric period had evolved a lifestyle, many of which distinguished themselves from other ways of life in Southeast Asia. In spite being exposed to other cultures, the material and spiritual influence were reshaped to suit the environment, skills, and needs of the inhabitants.

The first expression of art can be traced from prehistoric times which dates some 500,000 years ago. However, these indigenous art forms and national treasures pertain more to archeology rather than art. They are interesting and revealing but they do not produce aesthetic enjoyment

Evidences of the antiquity of man in our islands are found in numerous objects created for daily use found all over the country. At the foothillsbof Lemery and Taal,Batangas, the digging sites have yeilded man made tools, the variety of which ranges from crude ones in their original stones roughness to the skillfully made, sharp, blade-like examples. The presence of this implements in specific layers of these systematically stratified gives proof of continious habituation for a period of over 40,000 years.

"The Manunggul Burial Jar"BlogPostImage

The Manunggul burial jar (maybe called the queen of Philippine prehistoric artifacts.) has distinct cover showing the figures of men in a boat, presumably paddling toward the after-life. This piece of (Pottery) is artistically striking. Its ovate body is crowned by a uniqui lead cover, surmounted by an almost narrative, calmly incantatory group of sculpture: a representation of two souls rowing a boat in their voyage to the afterlife.

  • POTTERY. The most convenient approach to the study of thousands of pre-hispanic pottery is to classifynthem by shape, method of decoration, and type of design used in the surface. Shapes refer to the description of the vessel's body, the form of its mouth, the thickness of its lips, or the presence of ears, spouts, and legs are applied to its body. Method of decirations refers to the manner by which designs are applied on the body's surface. The decorative designs are either impressed or incised.
