Huh. I was wondering at the significance of the baby centipede footer. Didn't think it would be a reference to that hottie movie. The actual sculptures look surprisingly organic.
Interesting post, Jon! Never thought you had such a phase in your life, just assumed it was always the way it is now... plus, I have to admit, that I always envied you a little for the idea of your Toddlerpedes... something kind of revolutionary, I'd expect to see in the big museums of modern art!
So there really must be some truth to it, when Paul McCartney said, "nobody gets away with a perfect life". Important thing is, that the good part comes after we left the bad behind us ;-)
I often think of my life as a series of idiotic crackpot ideas which always cost me years to get over the consequences. Although its almost funny that I never tried any drugs... but then again, maybe I should be worried, that I can be stupid enough without them 😝
Anyways, like I said.. important is, that one reaches the right destination, even with all the detours. Maybe that way, one values the good things even more. Yes, I feel blessed too and am thankful for the direction my life took. Wishing us all a bright beautiful future!
I remember being ridiculously stoned and making this digital collage from photos of my Toddlerpede sculptures dancing and thinking it was absolutely brilliant!
You know, that's not so different from the way lots of artists feel while they are creating something new... even without any additional "priorities" to further confuse the matter. :)
And so, it is often only afterwards, once the passion of creation cools down, and one looks at the artwork more objectively (if at all possible), that other things show themselves.
awesome post. thanks for sharing with us these raw experiences of yours. well it looks like the todlerpedes still inform your work today... seeing as the logo of your gallery is these todlerpedes. hehe
Dante said that the path to paradise begins in hell. Especially free minded people, and artist are that mostly, do not have it easy. :) Very sincere and inspiring story. It sounds great that you are where you are now. Reinhard Schmid said it beautifully: "Wishing us all a bright beautiful future!"
Great story. I am happy for you how you pulled yourself up. But we can all look back at times like this. Seems to be the lot of artists, but I also think the romantic notion of the starving artist living in squalor is way overrated.
When I hurt myself, it would be best to be stoned (or get stoned) because I go into shock very easily. These days I have to be twice as careful, since I am taking blood thinners.
Well, I guess that's what is called suffering for your art. But, you put both your finger and life back together. That in itself, is an artform my good friend. =)
