"The Greek Art History."

in #art9 years ago (edited)

Greek Art is the style of artistic expression that flourished by Greek-speaking people from the 9th to the end of the centuries B.C. It is distinguished from earlier types by its concern with human values, its ideal beauty and creative expression of the human figures.

The unique contributions of greece to the early history of art are naturalusm and idealism. The Greeks originated the direct study of nature and the male needs as an essential basis for representation. Later, art turned to literal and realistic imitations. The highest aim of the Greek art was to improve on nature. Instead, they personified rivers, springs, forests, and mountains as mythological beings of graceful human forms. Since the Greeks developed along rational and intellectual lines, the Greeks attained greatest achievements in the art of form-architecture and sculpture.

The history of Greek art is divided into three principal periods: the Archaic period (800-600 B.C), the Classical period or Hellenic period (500 B.C), and the Hellenistic period (400-1,000 B.C)

In the Archaic period, the arts manifested the influence of earlier civilizations, such as those of Mesopotamia and Egypt, in their linear, geometric, tendency and stylized forms. This was seen in pottery with its variety of geometric designs and highly stylized human figures.

Wrestling was one of the more popular Greek sports.

In sculpture, there were two important types, the Kouros and the Kore. The kouros was a nude male figure, presumably that of an athlete. It showed the infuence of Egyptian sculpture in its frontality and rigidity, one foot slightly forward, the fists clenched at the sides. It also had a smiling face, slightly bulging eyes, and hair arranged in tight, geometric curls. The treatment of musculature of the body and limbs was naive and unsure. The Kore was a fully clad female figure, the drapery of its robe rendered in regular, vertical folds. The Kouros and the Kore sometimes held an offering of fruit or an animal to the gods.

This Greek sculpture made the goddess Aphrodite look like a real person. How did Greek art change from earlier times?

It is with the Classical or Hellenic period that Greek civilization, particularly that of Athens, is mainly associated. This period marks the highest point in the remarkable civilization of the anciet Greeks. It is also known as the Golden Age of Athens or the Age of Pericles, after its great statesman. As an outstanding period of cultural achievement, it is a constant point of reference in the history of art and philosophy.

The Classical period contains the mainsprings of Western cultural tradition in the philosophy that crystallized from the works of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. This period was preceded by a brief transitional period in which the arts of the earlier age underwent a process of maturation until they came into full flowering in the 5th century B.C.

Art and science meet in the Parthenon and in the classical temple in general. Found here is the practical application of the ideals of balance and proportion, giving the classical temple the appearance of an exquisite work of art.

The beginning of the Hellenistic period was marked by two important historical events: the defeat of Athens by its rival military Sparta, in 404 B.C., in the disastrous Peloponnesian War, and the subsequent conquest of the Greek city - states by Alexander the Great in 338 B.C.
These events put an end to the Golden Age of Athens, and henceforth, the ideals of classicism went into eclipse. The term "hellenistic," then refers to the period after the 5th century B.C. when Greek culture intermingled with oriental influences and, together with the political instability of time, gave rise to a new set of aesthetic ideals.

Painting in ancient Greece was largely confined to pottery. Greek pottery was first in a highly stylized, geometric style, which later developed into the expressive, flexible style of the red and white figured vases.

It was in the Helllenistic period that the painters Zeuris, Panhasius and Apollodorous gained legendary recognition for their naturalistic paintings.

There were two outstanding sculptors of the period: Praxiteles and Lysippos. Praxiteles is known best for the beautiful statue of Hermes and the infant Dionysus. He also did several Apollo such as the Apollo with a lizard and the Apollo crowning himself with a diadem. The statue of Hermes does not share the cool detachment of the classical Apollos; rather, his face fascinates the viewer with its dreamy, musing expression, while his body, with its subtle grace, expression erotic longour (languid or weak and drooping state).
