Digital art tutorial - How to paint an eye step by step

I just love painting eyes! They have a kind of magical feel to them and the colors they can have are just wonderful! In this digital art tutorial I'll be showing you how to paint an eye with digital painting software and (preferably) a drawing tablet.

STEP 1 - Make a sketch

The first step is of course to make a sketch! I used a photo for reference to get the proportions right.

STEP 2 -Base colors

The next step is to lay down the base colors of the eye, deciding the color for the iris. Remember that skin isn't just 'skin tone' but has a lot of color variety.

STEP 3 - Shadow, light and hair

Work on the shape and volume of the eye, adding darker shadow areas and adding light areas. Painting the eyebrow and lashes already makes it look more realistic!

STEP 4 - Detailing and highlights

It's so much fun adding those final details! Remember that the eyeball is a shiny, reflective surface, so it'll have a bright highlight and the upper lashes might reflect on the eyeball. Keep painting and detailing until you are completely satisfied. Have fun!
