Digital art tutorial - How to draw black and white fur

Fur and hair are so much fun to draw or paint! Painting black or white fur can be a challenge though. In this digital art tutorial I'll be showing you how to paint black and white fur using digital painting software and (preferably) a drawing tablet.

What you should keep in mind when painting white or black fur is that:

• White fur does have shadows!
• Black fur does have highlights!

The color and intensity of these highlights and shadows are dependent of the surroundings.
Depending on the surroundings white fur can be yellowish or blueish for example. Be sure to study reference material before painting fur!

When painting fur I prefer to paint from dark to light and from big strokes to small strokes. Follow the shape and movement of the fur as you paint your strokes and be sure to not block out the underlying dark tones when you start painting with lighter tones.

I used a simple round brush with slightly ragged edges to paint this fur. You can also use special hair or fur brushes though, as long as you understand the basics of painting fur. Remember that you don't have to make the fur detailed all over. You won't be able to see much detail in the shadows for instance.
