Doodling Qi'ra from Han Solo movie with ballpoint pen (+STEPS)

This is my approach to making quick warmup doodles with ballpoint pen. Today's character is Qi'ra from the new Star Wars spin-off movie. Lets's get to it!

Here I have figured out overall contour, lightly went down core shadow to block in the planes, added shape of the mouth and eye to nail the likeness in the beginning. I've made face broader on this stage to find out plane relations on the outer side of the face - I will chisel it back to center later

More shadow side, another eye, working out twist of the mouth but still concerned about it

Now I am chiseling face more from outside inwards. The same will be with the top of the head. I fill the shadows very loosely but with orientation of panels in mind - direction of the hatches amplify the sense of form and it is nice to imagine this drawing as object in space

Working out the eyes and planes of the nose

Here sketch is almost finished, some areas need to be refined and some spaces should be filled with ink. I like to sketch roughly like this to spare my time, if decisions were correct - drawing should be appealing even despite lack of refinement and smooth transitions.

Doodle is ready, time to move to the next one! It was done with mundane ballpoint pen in moleskine sketchbook, size is tiny. It took about half an hour to complete.
