Art is what is and it is what it isn’t - Art explained through a toy ducksteemCreated with Sketch.

How can that be?

Think about a toy rubber duck.
It no where near looks like an actual real duck but we still see it as a duck.
When we squeeze the rubber duck it makes a funny squeaking sound. This sound is no where close to the sound of a real duck and yet we accept this as being perfectly normal. When you think about it, to achieve this, is nothing less than miraculous.
For what is the meaning of the rubber duck?
What practicality does it perform?
Do we actually need the rubber duck?

It is a duck and it isn’t a duck. What is the reason for making a toy duck?  An amusement for children to play with in the bath? An object that puts a smile on our face or make us laugh? And if we take away the bath, does it still have any meaning or practical use?
How is it possible to create something that represents something we recognize but at the same time has no resemblance to the real item and have no real practical use and yet fits so easily into our lives almost without question?

Art is exactly like this. Art is a creation of something that we do not know what it is or have any practical use and yet we so easily accept it into our lives. Again, this is nothing short of miraculous. And miraculous is exactly the right word for art. It is this very none-sense non-pracitcal reasoning behind the creation of art, and the creation of a toy duck, that defines us as a unique species. It is what it is and it is what it isn’t.
And that is quite simply miraculous.

Thank you for visiting my blog and a warm welcome back next time @arthuradamson

This is a very good metaphor! Congrats!

Cheers, I thought so too

Yes I would say especially true in some abstract art. I would say this is especially true with minimalist photography as well.

Very true. Art is pure magic we invite into our lives for it transforms us.

I have a question though (again :)) When I think about magic I think about pure positive emotions and excitement. But what about art that makes us feel uncomfortable or negative emotions? Would you still call it magic?

I am thinking of the work of Marina Abramovic for example.

As I said in the beginning, for me art is always magical. Because it transforms us. But I would love to know what you think. :)
