Are we all versions of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde?

in #art9 years ago (edited)

It is said that there are two sides to everything, and so it is with people.

We all have a character and an appearance that we present to the outer world. And then of course, there is the world of the inner, we call the "subconscious".

This duality was first explored by Robert Louis Stephenson in his classic novel Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde written in 1886. Two years later his perceptive idea came to public prominence due to the White Chapel murderers of London, otherwise known as the case of Jack the Ripper.
Today we know a little more about the subconscious than Robert Louis Stephenson did back in his day. In one way or another we all wear a mask to some extent,  but the vast majority of people actually DO NOT have an evil side. But we do have many sides to who we really are.

Of course we can all do bad things and say things we do not mean, but to intentionally do"evil" is something entirely different. I think that the kind of person Robert Louis Stephenson was referring to is what we today would call a psychopath, or  someone who has a psychopathic personality.

At the moment the current percentage of the population who are said to have a psychopathic personality is some where between 2% and 5%. This means that at least 95% of people do NOT have a psychopathic personality. Which is somewhat comforting.

There is much talk about psychopathy today due to corporate criminals etc. And indeed psychopathy is an interesting subject, however, I find it as interesting that a non psychopathic person might have a hidden "nasty", "bitter" or "angry" side that they rarely show. And their outer persona, or mask, is that of a gentle looking person.

The idea is of course also an interesting one visually. As an artist I could not help having a go at making an illustration of the subject. However, to make the brief a little more interesting, I decided to twist the theory around. Meaning that someone looked and acted angry but were actually kind and gentle on the inside .

This is what I came up with. I used cut up newspapers, and car spray paint for the background and then colored inks for the actual drawing. People who know my work will  know that this is not my usual style.

Honestly is was just a bit of fun, so if anyone wishes to use it for anything, be my guest.
