Abstract Explosionism-Painting with Guns (with video)
Abstract Explosionism (shooting paint)Abstract Explosionism, a play off of the genre Abstract Expressionism, is a project that my younger brother Kevin and I decided to do last December. We both love to shoot, and I needed to test out my new camera and video editing software. So we loaded up on paint, plywood, cardboard, guns, and ammo then set off to go pow pow splat. |
The ammo used was .22 hollow points, 12 gauge birdshot, custom load .223 ballistic tips, 5.7x28mm ballistic tips, .40 Rip ammo. We shot at Spray Cans, 1 quart paint samples, and thinned out paint in water bottles.
A gun is a tool. How a person uses it is a reflection of the person, not the tool.
Conclusion
It was a fun experiment that I will definitely continue in the future. At the time we were more interested in shooting the guns and testing the camera than producing quality paintings. Right about the time we were starting to figure out the mechanics of painting with guns the project was over.Improvements for the next time:
Next time we will start off with a better idea of how to proceed. First, there will definitely be more time preparing paint with various mediums to create texture and character as opposed to the plain splats and drips that we ended up with. Planning the order of the colors and types of paint that we use should dramatically improve the final product as well. We learned that we either need to to make colored backings for these to utilize the space created from blasting holes through the wood and cardboard or simply set the paint up in a position to preserve the structure of what we are painting. Regardless of the project it is always a good time hanging out with my brother Kevin. So I am looking forward to another exploration. Who knows? Maybe next time we might add some Tannerite explosive targets into the mix.
