Platinum certification is awarded when the sale of an album reaches one million. This figure achieved Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct from physical album sales, on-demand digital music services and video streaming.

Hardwired... To Self-Destruct physical sales jumped from sales of album packages and tickets to the Metallica stadium concert tour that began on 17 February. Viewers who bought these concert tickets received a physical album. This purchase is listed in the album sales figures. Nevertheless, two Metallica albums in the decade of 2000's, Death Magnetic (2008) and St. Anger (2003) sold more than Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct in a week. Death Magnetic reaches 490,000 copies and St. Anger reached 418,000 in three days.
