Impressions Of History

in #art5 years ago

When I was at an age too young to understand art movements and revolutions, there was this one painting which attracted me like a moth to a flame. It felt too dreamy, too out of this world and so vibrant that I think would naturally appeal to a child. I never researched what more this artist had done or why had he even made it. All I could think was "Wow, this is done by a human?" It was the painting "Starry Night".

Not that I jumped immediately to copy it or something but it stuck with me forever after that and boosted my desire of learning art/painting. So whenever I see starry night, it invokes a good feeling in me reminding me of this memory. Later as I pursued design, we crossed paths with significant art movements throughout mankind's history. It was then that I understood about this style of art which belong to post impressionism.

The Starry Night

Post Impressionism was an art movement developed in the late 1800s as a rejection to Impressionism, which believed in observing surroundings and creating them as they are. But post impressionists differed from this ideology and instead believed that art was not about copying and that observing was just a tool for inspiration. Until and unless, an artist doesn't use emotions and imagination to make art, it cannot be called art.

Post impressionism focused more on an artist's creativity rather than realism. It was no more about the "actual" representation of a subject (colors, forms, lines, shapes, etc). The artist used vivid colors, abstract shapes with symbolism giving a painting deeper meaning and a look inside the artists' mind for a viewer. Thick paint was applied with bold brush strokes to express the artist's emotion, thought process and break the monotony of realism and Impressionism. This rawness that it provides to an artwork is exactly what I love about post impressionism. I am sure some of you must have heard about or seen the iconic painting (above) by Vincent Van Gogh at some point in your lives.

Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau, etc were a few amongst the many other world–renowned post impressionists each of who had their own unique style of painting even though they shared a similar vision. The artists were spread throughout Europe creating moments in their own perspectives unlike other movements where artists would form group and work together. Following are some of the greatest paintings from the era of Post impressionism which later led to the birth of Fauvism by 1910.
