The inner cell. An art installation in a former GDR prison

in #art-installation6 years ago (edited)

In summer 2015, in the frame of a massive exhibition called "Neue Sinnlichkeit", 300 artists flooded the former Ex-East-Germany's prison of Magdeburg, using every cell to showcase what they create. I Had the opportunity to take part of the project, which lasted there for three months.

My idea was to express the "inner prison" that today's plethora of communication means can create in us. Companies sell you the dream of being able to communicate with the world but at the same time many people seem to actually feel rather disconnected from reality, living in bubbles. Or as some seem to be unable to escape this, maybe a sort of prison.

Technically the installation consists in a few slightly different patterns that I printed hundred times and sticked all over the cell.

Inside, you can see a screen...

... where a short movie I produced was beamed from above the door. The movie featured me waking up, having a normal day going to work and then being kind of suck into that very room, like ending stuck inside a processor.

You can see a video of the setup here
