St. Francis of Assisi Church - Mexikoplatz, Vienna

A couple of days ago I took my new camera Canon Powershot SX540 HS out for a test. So I decided to go to Mexikoplatz to check out the church, which I had often seen going by, but never actually visited before.
The square was named Mexikoplatz in 1956, Mexico which was the sole country to protest at the League of Nations against the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria by Nazi Germany. source: Wikipedia

St. Francis of Assisi Church (German: St. Francis of Assisi ), also known as the Emperor's Jubilee Church (German: Kaiserjubiläumskirche) and the Mexico Church (German: Mexikokirche), is a Basilica-style Catholic church in Vienna, Austria. Built between 1898 and 1910, it was consecrated in 1913. It is located on the Mexikoplatz in Vienna's Second District, Leopoldstadt, and is administered by the Order of the Holy Trinity. source: Wikipedia

On the square outside, a stone tells the story about the re-naming of this square from Erzherzog-Karl-Platz to Mexiko-Platz. The stone is inscribed on opposite sides in Spanish and German, translated it says:

"In March 1938, Mexico was the only country to file official protests against the violent Anschluss of Austria to the National Socialist German Reich before the League of Nations. To commemorate this act, the city of Vienna has given this place the name Mexico Square."

If I have one critique about the erection of this stone I would say it should be raised off the ground sufficiently high
so it won't be defiled by dogs in this park.

Good joob

You would make a great guide Otto! Your tour of the Innenstadt was fun even for an indigenous Viennese.

thank you Sabina! My sis lived here all her life and just the other day she asked me to show her around because she had never been inside a church (other than Stephanskirche). .... and she wants to go to the Haus des Meeres .... and ... and ..... but I must say, I really started exploring Vienna during holidays here while I lived in Canada. So now I am a tourist in my own city!

That sounds potentially wonderful!

yeah, just something else to fill my day, since I hardly got anything to do lol - but I can combine that with a shooting trip.
Since I mentioned Haus des Meeres: they are renovating it starting in March! Been there several times, but not lately. Highly recommended!

Hiya, just swinging by to let you know that this post made the Honorable mentions list in today's Travel Digest!

wow, thank you, what an honor! This place is somewhat off the beaten path near the Danube, but tourists usually don't hang out there.

That is a beautiful building. It also seems to be huge!

it is a imposing building - travelling on the U-Bahn (a misnomer in that area, since it largely runs elevated from the North toward its nearest station where it goes underground) you can see it from miles away. The interior, not ornate as one expects and is used to from gothic and baroque churches in Vienna, even underscores that size.

Very interesting peace of history !
I know about Mexico that they thinking about to go the site of Nazi Germany, but on some point the design to don't be a part of this conflict . I didn t know about the protests the this renaming of the square. Its nice symbolic act ! Respect!

Very impressive Church too :)

Mexico is rarely mentioned when it comes to those times. Here is more info: https://www.thoughtco.com/mexican-involvement-in-world-war-two-2136644
as for the protest of Mexico at the League of Nations: it didn't have much effect, since the League was a lame duck already and eventually disbanded in 1946. But it is interesting historically, since nobody else but Mexico stood by Austria!
