A leisurely scroll through the architecture of Barcelona -- PART 2

in #architecture6 years ago

The second architect I mentioned in part 1 (Que: READ PART 1) was Lluís Domenech i Montener, pretty chill dude, had a 45 year tenure as an architectural professor. Lluís DM was also a very active politcian, he was a prominent leader in several political groups, including the Lliga Catalunya, Unió Catalanista, and the Lliga Regionalista.. you probably get the gist of what he was about.

Two of his most renowned architectural wonders are below in photos.

In 1896 Pau Gil i Serra a wealthy catalan banker died, as his dying wish he wanted a new medical facility built to serve the city of Barcelona hence the name Sant Pau was added to the name. Lluís DM designed 16 facilities of 24 in his unique modernist design, construction began in 1901 but didn't finish til 1930, however Lluís died in 1923, that's not convenient at all, so his son had to make sure his work was seen through to the end.

The Palau de la Música Catalana was financed by the Orfeó Català who were major drivers in the Catalan Renaixenca. Not surprisingly many meetings were held there between Catalan separatists before and during the first spanish dictatorship of Primo de Ribera.

I haven't talked about the biggest player yet in the Modernismo catalán scene, tomorrow there will be PART 3 make sure to check in!
