Architectural Curiosities - Episode OnesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #architecture7 years ago

Hello dear Steemians,

In this series of posts I will show you some of the coolest, weirdest and most unusual buildings in the world. I will always choose a city (or country) and pick two or three buildings I thought suitable to show on here. If your favourite building wasn't featured, feel free to tell me in the comments and I will consider putting it in another episode (many cities will be in multiple episodes, you just can not cover all of a city's highlights in two or three examples). But enough explaining, on to the first episode!

Episode One: New York

New York, as the biggest city in the "Land Of The Free" and one of the biggest cities in the world, does have some interesting and awesome buildings to show and will definitely reappear in a later episode. It was founded in 1626 under the name "Nieuw Amsterdam" and became its later and final (to this day, at least) name in 1664, when the British conquered it. It consists of five boroughs and is one of the best-known cities, with its popular, tourist-drawing places such as the Broadway, the Wall Street and the Times Square.

Cool, weird and unusual building Number 1: Flatiron Building

The Flatiron Building is, as its name suggests, shaped a little like a flatiron or a piece of cake. And unsurprisingly, there is a very valid reason for the building to be built that way. It is because of the way the streets in New York are arranged. While every other street belongs to a plain grid to form beautiful square building blocks, the Broadway cuts right through that and therefore divides some blocks. And as geometry and math demand, it just so happens that one block will have a much larger and a much smaller portion. And that much smaller portion is our well-known Flatiron Building. This is actually really well visible on a map of Manhattan, look it up.

Cool, weird and unusual building Number 2: New York by Gehry

This curvy and kind-of-unsettling-looking building is one of the many masterpieces by Frank Gehry. He is known for his unorthodox way of designing and realising buildings and they can be seen all over the US (mainly California) and Europe. "New York by Gehry", located on 8 Spruce Street is one of the highest residential buildings in the world and was the highest in the western hemisphere by the time of its opening in February 2011. It also houses a school and was planned to accommodate a hospital, but that project was never put into action. Interestingly, the backside of the building does not have its characteristic crinkles.

Cool, weird and unusual building Number 3: Guggenheim Museum

This almost cylindric-shaped building is one of the most important museums for modern art of our time. The helixes the building is shaped in are at the same time the place, where all the art is showcased. It is an ascending, revolving hallway decorated with amazing pictures and sculptures. The museum, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and opened in 1959 was named after Solomon R. Guggenheim and is the oldest and best-known of the Guggenheims. Since the building is so impressive from the inside, it does deserve an own image.

That was the first episode of hopefully many to come. Please leave feedback and suggestions in the comments below :)
