Advancements in Technology, particularly the rise of AI, will inevitably impact the current workforce. In a world where human labor is replaced by automated machines, we must find ways to create new jobs for workers that are being displaced. Google has promised to fund training that will help people who have lost jobs to AI. This project is designed to house one of Google’s many new retraining buildings. It will be comprised of spaces that integrate work and education, with practicing techie’s leading training courses. There will also be a central core containing one of GOOGLE’s AI server farms.

The building is an infill project in the Arts District, between Zinc and a warehouse building. The program consists of a retraining facility, offices for Google, automated parking and a central AI Core, with the programmed spaces wrapping around the central core. The office and retraining spaces are located opposite each other separated by a half floor. The exterior façade is made up a loose arrangement of curving glass walls with a series of exterior terraces.

This building offers a positive perspective on Google’s commitment to education and giving people new employment opportunities, while also acknowledging that artificial intelligence (the reason these people lost their jobs) will be operating at its core. This project addresses both the optimism and fear that come with new technologies.
