📖Diaries from Germany - Berlin Day 1 - The Reichstag
As you know recently i came from my trip to Germany and i'm now starting a series "Diaries from Germany" where i will tell you more about my trip what i saw there. I will write a post for each place i visited including some history about it. So let's get it started ! My first day was in Berlin. I arrived there with an airplane from Vienna. It was a pretty short flight so we(me and my girlfriend) arrived fast. We had a hotel booked just right next to Hauptbahnhof Berlin. The Hotel was called Meininger and it was pretty good priced for the location where it was. The next day we woke up, had a breakfast in the hotel, which was okayish, because there were a lot of children groups at that time and the restaurant was full. Anyway our first destination was The Reichstag. We were surprised how close we were actually to it. It took us only 10 min of walking to arrive there.
As you can see the weather was a bit on the rainy side, but that didnt stop us from walking around. The building itself is very big and pretty, with a glass dome on the top. You can even go in it or walk down around it, BUT you need to make a reservation for that. So here comes our first obstacle from our trip. We didnt know that you need to reserve an appointment with a day and exact hour so you can enter. When we asked there, they told us that this is possible only online and you can not make an appointment there on place. But even if you make an appointment online you need to wait months to be accepted. So in the end we were not able to go on the top of the Reichstag, we just enjoyed it from outside...
One suggestion for the people that plan to visit Berlin and the Reichstag: Visit this website and make an appointment at least 1 month before you go in Berlin, so you have a chance to be accepted on time.
For those who dont know what is The Reichstag:
Reichstag is a German word generally meaning parliament, more directly translated as Diet of the Realm or National diet, or more loosely as Imperial Diet.
The Reichstag Building Today
First, let’s clear up a few things. The German word Reichstag means “imperial parliament” (das Reich, empire + der Tag, diet). The term Reichstag actually refers to the historic series of governing bodies in the German realm, and the former Prussian/German legislative body that was created in 1867 (for the North German Confederation). However, the term is often also used as shorthand for the building in which the Reichstag met for many years. Today the Reichstag building (das Reichstagsgebäude) houses the Bundestag, but it has kept the traditional “Reichstag” name.
