The old water castle #aswcontest

This is my entry for this week's Abandoned Shit Weekly, the theme being that of windows. And what better choice than this. Brăila's old water tower, dubbed the Water Castle, due to it's magnificent architecture. Built over a century ago, 1912 to be more precise, when it was the tallest building in the city, it served as a water tower for the few houses back then that were connected to the city water supply.

As technology advanced, taller buildings were built, and pumps became a thing, it was abandoned and left to rot for a few decades. Then it was turned into a magnificent restaurant, where the top wasn't just covered in windows, but the central platform would actually rotate, allowing everyone inside to get a full view of the city, without ever moving from their table.

It was magnificent, but after '89 it was left to rot, and it's still doing that. There are plans to turn it into an observatory, which if we're lucky will happen somewhere around 2020... or at least that's when the work will start.
