Tanais is an ancient Greek city founded by the Bosporan Greeks, one of the last in the process of Greece's development of the northern and eastern coasts of the Black Sea and the Northeastern Azov Sea (in the first quarter of the III century BC).
It got its name from the Greek name of the Don River, at the mouth of which a place was chosen for its construction. For more than six centuries, Tanais has been a major economic and cultural center of the vast region.
