Rain Oculus

The Shoppes at Marina bay Sands
If you've been to Singapore this is one of the places that's surely included in your trip itinerary. With its 3 tall blocks carrying a massive skypark with infinity pool on top which according to wikipedia is the worlds largest public cantilevered platform.

During your stroll within the area, did you notice big acrylic bowl in front of the Shoppes? And did you ever wonder what it's function?

The big bowl is what they call "Rain Oculus". It is an artwork by Ned Khan in collaboration with Architect Moshe Safdie. (nedkhan.com). According to nedkhan.com, it also functions as a skylight and a rain collector. The Rain water is recycled back to the whirlpool and also fills a canal that runs through the atrium.

Did you know there is another trick that can be tried here?

Apparently, if you and your friend stand opposite of each other across the Rian Oculus and try to whisper directly in the bowl you can clearly hear each other!

This is because of the hemispherical structure of the whirlpool in which the sound is carried by waves, usually known as whispering-gallery waves. According to Wikipedia, this effect was discovered in the whispering gallery of St. Paul's Church in London.
So when you try to visit Singapore, don't forget to go to the "Rain Oculus" and tell your friends the idea and the science tricks you learned about it.
