Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec
As the oldest church in Canada, Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec is a National Historic Site of Canada within old Quebec City. In 2014, the church celebrated its 350th anniversary.
It was built in 1647 to replace a chapel on this site that was built by Samuel de Champlain in 1633. During the Siege of Quebec in 1759, it was destroyed and then rebuilt from old plans. It has twice been destroyed by fire and rebuilt.
The cathedral was designated as a national historic site of Canada in 1989 because "... of its long and close associations with the history of New France; its influence on subsequent ecclesiastical architecture and interior decoration in Québec. ....Wikipedia
It was the first church to be elevated to the rank of a minor basilica in 1874.
In 1843, the façade was reconstructed to resemble the church of Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, resulting in the finest Neo-classic façade in Québec.
