Babcia mojej dziewczyny mieszka w Lubartowie. Robi fantastyczne pierogi w ilościach hurtowych i podróżuje kiedy tylko pozwala jej na to zdrowie - od Warszawy po Zurich, korzystając z przysługujących jej w tym wieku zniżek. Dość często ją odwiedzamy. Busy do Lubartowa odjeżdżają z dworca w Lublinie średnio co 15 minut. Podróż kosztuje 4,50 złotych. Po 40 minutach jesteśmy na miejscu. Jednak nie każdy ma babcię w Lubartowie.

My girlfriend's grandma is living in Lubartów. She makes fantastic dumplings in humongous quantities and travels whenever her health allows - be it Warsaw or even Zurich, taking advantage of the discounts she is entitled to at this age. We visit her quite often. The buses to Lubartów leave from the Lublin bus station every 15 minutes. The cost of the journey is 4,50 PLN. After 40 minutes we are there. The problem is that not everyone has a grandmother in Lubartów.

Miasto zostało założone w 1543 roku przez Piotra Firleja, za zgodą króla Zygmunta I Starego. Później, dzięki sprowadzeniu wysoko wykwalifikowanych rzemieślników z Zachodu, Lubartów przeżył rozkwit. Przy okazji stał się siedzibą ruchu reformacyjnego w okolicy. W XVII wieku miasto należało do rodu Sanguszków, którzy przyczynili się do dalszego rozwoju miasta, budując przy tym wspaniały pałac, barokowe kościoły i kilka kamienic. Od XVI wieku na terenie Lubartowa działała bogata gmina żydowska. W przededniu drugiej wojny światowej Żydzi stanowili 50% mieszkańców miasta. Większość z nich zakończyła swój żywot w Niemieckich obozach w Bełżcu i Sobiborze.

The town was founded in 1543 by Piotr Firlej, with the consent of King Sigismund I the Old. Later, thanks attracting the highly qualified craftsmen from the West, Lubartów flourished. Meanwhile, it became the heart of the Reformation movement in the region. In the 17th century, the town belonged to the Sanguszko family, who contributed to the further development of the town by building a magnificent palace, baroque churches and several tenement houses. Since the 16th century, a rich Jewish Kahal has been thriving in Lubartów. On the eve of the Second World War, Jews made up 50% of the town's population. Most of them ended their lives in the German concentration camps in Bełżec and Sobibór.

We współczesnym Lubartowie widać wyraźnie minione dzieje. Historia przypomina odłażące płaty farby, malowanej warstwa na warstwie. Architektura głównej ulicy daje znać o tym, że było to kupieckie, żydowskie miasteczko. Gdzieniegdzie wystaje wieża barokowego kościoła. Na obrzeżach miasta rozpadają się chatynki pamiętające jeszcze XIX wiek. Pomiędzy nimi prężą się wielorodzinne twory socjalistycznej myśli budowlanej. Wszystko to pokryte wielobarwnym chaosem szyldów i reklam. Textil Market, Biedronka, Pepco. Miasto z chińskiego plastiku i porzuconych marzeń.

In today's Lubartow we can clearly see its' past. The history resembles the flakes of paint, painted layer on a layer. The architecture of the main street shows that it was a merchant Jewish town. The tower of some Baroque church sticks out sometimes. On the outskirts of the town, huts that still remember the 19th century are crumbling apart. Between them the multifamily structures of the socialist architectural thought are burgeoning. All of this is covered in multicoloured chaos of signs and advertisements. Textil Market, Biedronka, Pepco. A city of Chinese plastic and abandoned dreams.

Lubartów bowiem należy sobie dawkować. Patrzeć nań przez zmrużone powieki. Babcia J. mówi, że "czuje się jak w Rzymie" mając z mieszkania widok na wieże dwóch kościołów. Może nie należy szczególnie rozwodzić się nad faktem, że kilka metrów od bazyliki paru Sebów popija "Perłę" z gwinta, patrząc dziko. W Lubartowie piękna jest całkiem sporo - Bazylika Św. Anny, zabytkowe budynki, pałac Sanguszków i roztaczający się za nim park. Wiele jest w Polsce podobnych miasteczek - niekompletnych, ale oferujących coś ważnego - pracę, rozrywkę, kulturę, historię, piękno... Nigdy nie będą mogły konkurować z dużymi ośrodkami. A gdyby przestać patrzeć na poszczególne miasteczka i zacząć postrzegać je jako części regionów, związanych ze sobą podobnie jak dzielnice miast?

Lubartów should be taken in doses. Looked upon through the fingers. J's grandmother says that she "feels like in Rome" having a view of the towers of two churches from her apartment. Perhaps one shouldn't dwell on the fact that a few meters from the basilica a few young thugs drink cheap beer from the bottle, with a wild stare. There is a lot of beauty in Lubartów - St. Anne's Basilica, antique buildings, the Sanguszko's Palace and the park behind it. There are many similar towns in Poland - incomplete, but offering something important - work, entertainment, culture, history, beauty... They will never be able to compete with large centres. What if we stop looking at individual towns and start to see them as part of regions, connected with each other, just districts of the city?
