Archisteem 12: Friendly Architecture Curation - A Lantern Solution for The Homeless

Today's curated project: A Temporary Housing for The Homeless

image.png

This conceptual proposal is led by 1 Week 1 Project which took place in Paris, France. The proposal is a modular and replicable structure that can spread indefinitely. The proposal is intended to build for the homeless; in the meantime, it is able to transform into other functions as well. Ideally, this proposal will be implemented and funded by the government as an infrastructural project for the public use.

When we see homeless people, we do have the heart that wanted to help and provide them with shelter and food. Most of the time, the public can only provide some clothing and food for them but it is almost impossible to provide them a space in our home to let them take shelter. So, what else can we do to help?

image.png

Homeless people consisted of different clusters, some are from local poor families and some are war refugees who have no choice but to flee from their home. Government like German and France are taking in a lot of refugees lately and the burden on the government is tremendously heavy as those refugees are not able to contribute to any value creation for the society just yet. When people are desperate, things may get nasty as they want to have access to water, sanitation, food, and shelter.

In France, there is an interesting proposal by the Paris based firm, 1 week 1 project that designed a temporary shelter with great aesthetic value as well for the homeless. The project, “Illuminate Paris!” takes place under elevated railway bridge which usually is not utilized and left deserted. The design structure takes the form of a Chinese lantern that forms a canopy along the underside of the bridge. Rather than being forced to sleep without any shelter or just a blanket under the same space, why not have that as an alternative?

Not only the refugees are provided with shelters and get to lead a normal life and gain back independence in their life, the project can also function as playground, performance space and public park. Besides, as the architect mentioned, it can be also adapted into a pop-up store for the young entrepreneurs, an affordable and casual co-working space and even a spot for a music festival with the lanterns structure as a decorative lighting.

The most valuable proposition of this proposal is that it is able to reclaim the under-utilized spaces under the aerial subway line/flyovers with a modular, multifunctional and reusable installation. This could benefit both local and also the refugees as well. The installation is made up of recycled transparent polypropylene canvas framed with coils of spring bamboo tubes. It is lightweight and yet strong enough to hold few users per lantern.

It would be interesting to see if Malaysia can have such revitalization under the bridge and making the underutilized space livelier.

These are so beautiful, they remind of japanese lanterns.
