Exploring CHIJMES, A look into the past and its heritage

in #archisteem6 years ago (edited)

Singapore is a country of multi-layered culture and religion. It may be small in size but diversed in tourist attractions and recreations. If you happen to visit this country, one of the recognizable features are the modern buildings that vary from hotels, theme parks, & commercial establishments.

Another noticeable landmark are heritage buildings that are well preserved and maintained, one of which is Chijmes.

More than a century ago, this building is used to be a convent school which is previously known as CHIJ which means Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus. It was established in 1854 by an order of French Catholic nuns.

Interestingly, about 26 years ago, it was converted to a place of dining and drinking venue.

Concurrently, the Chapel is now being utilized as a multi-purpose hall known as Chijmes Hall it's a perfect venue for wedding ceremonies.

The interior of the chapel features glass panels that depicts the scenes from the Bible which also includes the 12 Apostles. The glamorous cross vaulted ceiling and the magnificent chandeliers provides a monumental feeling that is perfect for a banquet.

While walking along the courtyard, immediately you will notice a grassy lawn with hammock. This area could easily be your place of comfort & relaxation.

It's also surrounded by restaurants and bars that are strategically positioned along the passages of the courtyard. You could easily be lost along the passages if you don't pay attention to where you started your stroll.

The remarkable feature of this place is the Neo-classical style of architecture with its predominant Doric columns which act as the main support of the structure.

The Caldwell House with its dominant semi-circle extension was designed by Architect G.D. Coleman. It is said to have similarities with the Tollygung House in Calcutta which is also designed by himself.

Among all the buildings within the complex, the Gothic chapel stands as the main center piece. Featuring its Flying Buttresses which resembles the like of the cathedrals of Europe.

The Gothic chapel also features a five storey spire, and on its facade are the intricately carved Latin words "lesu Homine Salvator" which means "Jesus, Savior of the World".

Of all these preservation effort for the Chijmes complex, what are the benefits that the community could gain? Surprisingly, there are number of benefits that the locality gain from it.

Let's look into the economic benefits of restoring heritage buildings.

Apparently, restoration of old buildings is cheaper in comparison to the construction of a new development. The basic structure and architectural elements are already in place and if it's in good condition then a minor touch-up will do a satisfactory result.

It will also boost tourism in the locality which directly impact the local businesses surrounding the heritage site or building. It will also benefit the growth of employment through the needs for professionals that will take charge on the restoration process of the heritage site.

Lastly, it will also revitalize the old neighborhood of the heritage site or building. It will strengthen the bond of the community by linking the old generation to the new generation. In most cases, the community will be involved as volunteers that will serve as tour guides and be able to join the neighborhood activities that will maintain the cohesive relationship among each other. Thus, resulting to a sustainable economic and social activity for the local community.
