GAME ON!

@archdruid, @curie, @veryspider and @elfranz... Here's my 1st entry (two more are coming soon) to the CONTEST.

Thank you all for this great idea!

Bandai Namco Store

Pac-Man is one of the greatest successes of the arcade games of the 80s and it has one of the simplest formulas in the world: putting the player in control of a yellow round head that through systemic and unstoppable movements (opening and closing its mouth) has the function of navigating in a labyrinth with tablets and some enemies (more precisely, 4 ghosts - known as galaxians - who chase him relentlessly).

The functionality of the game produced by the Namco company (and distributed to the american market by Midway Games) consists of eating these tablets at the same time as it escapes the ghosts through labyrinths that present themselves in increasingly challenging ways for players.

O Tempo

The only attack on the part of the players (which is having to go in combat against the galaxians) is to eat bigger tablets that allow a kind of shield to him, in this way it is possible to destroy the enemies feeding on them. But time is limited, causing a quick strategy to be drawn into the player's mind so that a good use of that weapon is made.

This mechanic of limited power is called "Power-Up" (which came about based on the adventures of the Popeye sailor, where he gets stronger after eating spinach) and was introduced for the first time in this game, becoming something pioneering in the world of games and being copied in the launch of several other games (among them the also famous Super Mario Bros.).

Power Up Gaming

The success of the game was undeniable and the next step was: plan and launch the next sequences. So, with increasingly better graphics, different versions for different types of consoles reached the market and were further consolidating the success of the franchise (which in the years 1982 to 1984 won an animated series, produced by the company Hannah-Barbera).

Globally popular, this game was considered the first capable of generating a massive return through brutal merchandising that resulted in the sale of shirts, caps, coats, books, board games, sheets, towels and many other personalized goals. It was a real fever, a sensation among gamers around the world and with the passage of time has been gaining interesting updates.

An interesting curiosity about the development of the game is related to its name (which originated from a dinner between Toru Iwatani - a Namco designers and creator of the game - with some friends), who was baptized because of the shape of an incomplete pizza (without a slice).

Could you have imagined that? What an unusual way to create the name of a video game... Haha! But you know... People say that the best ideas usually come at the most unexpected times, right? ;)

Financial Times

With a gradual difficulty (from the simplest level to the most complex ones... and you better not underestimate this game) Pac-Man manages to be a great mix that consists of "fun" and "challenge" in a skillfully simple yet very efficient way... Plus, believe me, it's so damn addictive (and you only realize it when it's too late to go back, haha)!

CGM

Curiosity:

  • In 2015, the game won a special tribute in the live action version which was based on the classic arcades games of past decades and grossed over $244 million worldwide. Directed by Chris Columbus, the movie has in its cast names like Adam Sandler, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage and Kevin James.

It's also worth mentioning the incredible street artwork has also been inspired by this game likegraffiti and 3D painting... Beyond cosplays and tattoos.

Fun fact:

Do you know where the name of the game comes from?

  • Initially the game was christened Puck-Man, but for fear of the word "Puck" being associated with the word "fuck", it was renamed "Pac", becoming famous the year after its release.

I'm sure you remember that game (I mean... If you really liked to play video game, haha) as well as I do! In my opinion, within the world of arcade games... This is one of my favorites because it consumed a lot of my time in childhood! :-)
